"Urban Farm" [class assignment] is a human interest magazine devoted to urban farming culture across the United States. This issue is devoted to Detroit, a city with a burgeoning urban agriculture movement.

A handwritten-lettering motif is used throughout the magazine (headlines, some captions, drop caps) to reinforce and honor the homespun, "homestead" character of urban farming, especially as it characterized in Detroit (the urban farming movement is paralleled by a strong crafting community).

The photography depicts both the lively beauty of agriculture, food, and plants, and the vacancy and decay of Detroit.

Bird watching is an exciting way to connect with nature, and it can be done in urban environments. Unfortunately, most people outside the bird watching community do not have an extensive understanding of birds and often do not realize bird watching is possible in the city. Additionally, birding organizations such as Audubon California have expressed a desire to garner a larger number of young adult participants, as this demographic has been missing from the briding community. Bird watching could follow in the footsteps of other recent popularizations of traditional pastimes like knitting and home canning among young adults.

In response to these needs, I designed a campaign to rebrand bird watching for young citydwellers. The name of my campaign is URBAN BIRD. Reflecting the interests of the 18 to 35-year-old demographic, the center of my campaign is a blog, WWW.URBANBIRD.ORG, where birding resources, urban birding news, and art and design related to birds are posted and discussed. Social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter are linked to the main blog to provide even more accessibility and connectability to the urban birding community. A number of promotional materials (t shirts, a poster series, buttons, postcards, etc.) also support the URBAN BIRD campaign.</description>

The "Creating Things" poster was created in response to a class assignment to design a poster about our creative process. I used paper and cardboard textures, digital collage, and simulated cut-paper type to create a whimsical scene, evoking the mixture of handmade and computer generated elements I utilize in my process and final work.

These postcards and flyer were created as an overhaul of the Skokie Sculpture Park's marketing materials [class project]. The park, complete with a bike path and plenty of foliage, runs along a 2 mile stretch of road in Skokie, Illinois. Over 60 large scale contemporary sculptures line the park.

For these materials, I photographed the sculptures with an emphasis on their place in a natural setting. The sculptural forms themselves are cropped and abstracted. The overall tone of the materials is one of slightly edgy, artsy playfulness.

"Hand made" was created in response to a class assignment to illustrate a term using creative typography. Using Helvetica Neue Bold as a template, I created a physical typeface out of wool string and photographed it against a crinkled paper background.
